Overview
This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum Music
This section outlines what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and the musical opportunities pupils can access.
Each class receives 1 hour of music teaching per week. Our curriculum overview, available on the school website, outlines the skills and progression taught through weekly music lessons.
- All pupils have opportunities to play instruments, improvise and compose over the course of the school year.
- We follow a combination of the Charanga Model Music Curriculum and the Charanga Original Scheme.
- We work in partnership with Greater Essex Music Hub and Essex Music Service to enhance musical opportunities.
- Pupils perform regularly in class and in assemblies as part of an ensemble.
- Year 6 pupils can access off-site music lessons with We Are Music.
- Year 3 pupils receive instrument lessons from an external tutor funded by Essex Music Hub. Instrument hire costs are met by the school.
Part B: Co-curricular Music
This section explains how pupils can continue to develop their musical skills beyond lesson time.
- We offer a Musical Theatre club for pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, working towards the annual school musical production.
- Holiday rehearsals are provided free of charge, and all after-school clubs are free with instruments supplied.
- We promote free lessons through We Are Music and encourage pupils to enrol. Further information is available from Miss Cooper or via https://we-are-music.org.uk/
- During the summer holidays, pupils can attend a Musical Theatre workshop where they create and perform their own musical.
- Piano tuition is offered during the school day by RAD at a cost to parents.
Part C: Musical Experiences
This section highlights wider musical opportunities offered throughout the year.
- Weekly key stage singing assemblies exploring songs from a wide range of genres.
- Annual school musical production – this year’s production is Dare to Dream.
- KS1 Nativity performances and KS2 Christmas Carol Concert.
- Year 6 end-of-school production.
- Previous visits to the Royal Opera House to watch the Royal Ballet and participate in ‘Create’ days.
- Ongoing collaboration with the Royal Opera House to provide future performance opportunities.
- Workshops and performance opportunities with local schools and theatre company Funnelwick Limb.
Some musical experiences may incur a charge; however, we endeavour to keep costs low and apply for grants where possible.
In the Future
- Exploring opportunities for our Musical Theatre Group to participate in a nationwide competition.
- Continuing collaboration with the Royal Opera House to enrich pupil experiences.
- Active involvement in Tendring Creatives to bring further creative opportunities to local schools.
